The Kona, on the other hand, has a 6.7-inch ground clearance, a 107.0-inch wheelbase and a 177.3-inch length. This model has traditionally been one of the smaller options in the class, but it’s now more in line with the HR-V. Aluminum wheels are standard in both cases. Honda offers 17- and 18-inch wheels. Hyundai offers 16-, 17-, 18- and 19-inch wheels.

The Honda engine delivers more output on paper, but even that does not tell the full story. The Kona delivers what many critics consider to be one of the more anemic driving experiences in the class, but that does allow it some rather impressive fuel economy numbers. The Hyundai Kona has not been tested as of this rating, but the Kona has not traditionally been a Top Safety Pick+ or even a Top Safety Pick. Standard safety features are comparable for the most part, but we like that Honda includes adaptive cruise control. Hyundai offers it as an option. But on the plus side for Hyundai, if your budget allows you to shop at the top of the range, you can get some features on the Kona that you can’t on the Honda, such as a blind-spot camera.
