2024 Honda HR-V vs 2024 Hyundai KonaView Inventory
If you’d like to purchase or lease a small crossover that is affordable but delivers a lot of value at that price point, the team at Great Lakes Honda City recommends comparing the 2024 Honda HR-V vs 2024 Hyundai Kona. The HR-V is widely credited with launching the subcompact crossover segment, and the Kona premiered just a couple of years later and has proved to be a strong competitor. This is a particularly good time to compare the models as the HR-V was completely redesigned last model year, and the Kona receives its all-new platform this model year. With both models, you have three core choices. The 2024 Honda HR-V is available in the LX, Sport and EX-L trim levels, and the 2024 Hyundai Kona is available in the SE, SEL and Limited trim levels. Note that Konda also offers performance-oriented N and N Line models, but we’ll skip those for the purposes of this comparison.

Both the 2024 Honda HR-V and 2024 Hyundai Kona are extra-small crossover SUVs with four doors and a rear liftgate. The HR-V has a 7.0-inch ground clearance, a 104.5-inch wheelbase and a 179.8-inch length, which is just shy of 15 feet and thus at the upper end of this size class. The Kona, on the other hand, has a 6.7-inch ground clearance, a 107.0-inch wheelbase and a 177.3-inch length. This model has traditionally been one of the smaller options in the class, but it’s now more in line with the HR-V. Aluminum wheels are standard in both cases. Honda offers 17- and 18-inch wheels. Hyundai offers 16-, 17-, 18- and 19-inch wheels.
A big consideration when shopping in this space is interior spaciousness. Both are five-passenger vehicles that provide about 42 inches of front legroom and 38 inches of second-row legroom. The 2024 Honda HR-V and 2024 Hyundai Kona are also quite similar in that they provide about 25 cubic feet of dedicated cargo space, which is quite good for the segment. The base interiors are similar with features like premium cloth seating, automatic climate control, a center touch screen and a sound system. For those who want a more upscale experience, both automakers offer it with features like genuine leather upholstery, a wireless charging pad, a premium audio system and so forth.
Honda HR-V Mechanical specs
One of the knocks against the Kona over the years has been the base powertrain, and the redesign has really done nothing to confront these criticisms. In both cases, you have the choice between front- and all-wheel drive. Both automakers opt for a continuously variable transmission or CVT, and both opt for a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine. The Honda engine delivers more output on paper, but even that does not tell the full story. The Kona delivers what many critics consider to be one of the more anemic driving experiences in the class, but that does allow it some rather impressive fuel economy numbers. That said, the HR-V is very fuel efficient as well, and we highly recommend a test-drive to compare the 2024 Honda HR-V vs 2024 Hyundai Kona.

The Honda HR-V available at Great Lakes Honda City is a Top Safety Pick+, which is the highest safety recognition the IIHS gives out. The Hyundai Kona has not been tested as of this rating, but the Kona has not traditionally been a Top Safety Pick+ or even a Top Safety Pick. Standard safety features are comparable for the most part, but we like that Honda includes adaptive cruise control. Hyundai offers it as an option. But on the plus side for Hyundai, if your budget allows you to shop at the top of the range, you can get some features on the Kona that you can’t on the Honda, such as a blind-spot camera.
